90% reduction in coral in Nha Trang
Nha Trang Bay, one of the most beautiful bays in the world, which is considered to have high biodiversity compared to many other regions in Vietnam, has reduced the amount of healthy and abundant corals by up to 90% compared to four decades before.

This is a study published last year by a group of scientists at the Institute of Ecology and Evolution, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang published in the journal of Marine and Freshwater Research.
The reasons for the decline of corals here are due to both human impacts and climate change: The warming of the oceans - the trend of increasing sea surface temperature in the coastal area of Vietnam at about 0.448oC per decade, the pressure caused by man on the ocean is increasing as well untreated coastal land, municipal wastes, from economic activities, such as a growing aquaculture industry, large-scale overfishing in the bay, tourism and other natural disturbances, such as a starfish outbreak.

This new result shows that the amount of coral has decreased a lot compared with the "Biodiversity assessment of Nha Trang Bay MPA" conducted by the Institute of Oceanography in the period of 2012-2015, when the corals no longer maintained in good condition, the average coverage of living coral was 20.1%. In which, there are many coral reefs that have been severely degraded since 2002 and before, it is difficult to recover naturally.
