This is one of the dialogue realized at the previous meeting among the leaders of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the British Embassy in early February 2021.
Many opportunities for cooperation
Over the past years, the Government of Vietnam has always been interested and set the goal of electricity development to be one step ahead to meet the requirements of socio-economic development, national security and defense, and electricity demand for people's daily life, ensuring national energy security. With that concern, Vietnam's national electricity system has made great progress, by the end of 2020, the total installed capacity of electricity sources in Vietnam has reached over 69,000 MW.
In the context that large hydropower sources have basically been fully exploited, coal-fired thermal power sources have difficulty in mobilizing capital due to commitments related to global climate change and costly gas thermal power with high price and highly dependent on the world market, the Government of Vietnam issued Decision No. 2068 / QD-TTg dated November 25, 2030, with a vision to 2055. In which, clearly stated the target, the proportion of electricity produced from renewable energy in the total electricity produced nationwide increased from about 35% in 2015 to about 38% by 2020; will reach about 32% by 2030 and about 43% by 2050. As a result, by the end of 2020, the total capacity of renewable energy sources excluding hydro will reach 25.3% of the total system capacity. Especially from 2018 up to now, the number of projects and installations of floating and ground solar power sources have increased markedly.
Speaking at the Dialogue, Mr. Gareth Ward - UK Ambassador in Vietnam said that solar and offshore wind power have great potential. In particular, the renewable energy industry will create a lot of jobs for Vietnamese workers. |
