At the Consultation Workshop on Building and Operating a Voluntary Carbon Credit Exchange in Vietnam, Mr. Tang The Cuong, Director of the Department of Climate Change, said that Vietnam is currently developing a carbon market development project in the country, focusing on the mandatory transaction of the exchange of greenhouse gas emission quotas of enterprises and the exchange in the domestic carbon market, oriented to connect with the international market.

To implement this roadmap, it is necessary to prepare carefully in terms of infrastructure, technology, inventory and reporting capacity of enterprises. Accordingly, the whole country has 1,912 enterprises that are required to take inventory of greenhouse gases and meet emission quotas.

The draft project "Development of a carbon market in Vietnam" is built on the basis of Decree No. 06/2022/ND-CP. Accordingly, from now until the end of 2027, our country will focus on developing regulations on carbon credit management, exchange of greenhouse gas emission quotas and carbon credits;

make regulations on operation of carbon credit trading floors; pilot implementation of the carbon credit exchange and clearing mechanism in potential areas and guide the implementation of the domestic and international carbon credit exchange and clearing mechanism in accordance with the provisions of laws and regulations international conventions to which Vietnam is a member; establish and organize pilot operation of a carbon credit exchange from 2025; implementing capacity building activities, raising awareness about carbon market development; It is expected that by 2028, the carbon credit exchange will officially operate.
