Attending the review session, on the Vietnamese side, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh chaired the session with the participation of representatives of relevant ministries, branches and agencies, including representatives of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Science and technology. Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and other international organizations and delegations attended from the bridgehead of Geneva, Switzerland.
On the WTO side, the meeting was chaired by Mrs. Athaliah Lesiba Molokomme, Ambassador Botswana, Head of Trade Policy Review Department of TWO with the participation of panelists, Ambassador - Head of the Dutch Delegation to the WTO Monique Van Daalen, representative of the WTO Secretariat and WTO members interested in Vietnam's Review Session.
In the field of intellectual property, before this online session, Vietnam received a total of 53 written questions related to the establishment and protection of industrial property rights from 17 WTO members, of which Canada, the United States, Mexico, the European Union and the United Kingdom are the members with the most questions. These questions focused on changes in Vietnam's policies, laws and enforcement practices, especially in the area of intellectual property rights protection in the period of 2013-2019. All these questions have been researched and answered in writing by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam, in collaboration with relevant units in the Ministry of Science and Technology.
At the Review session, intellectual property continued to be one of the issues that received much attention from the delegates. In her opening speech, Mrs. Athaliah Lesiba Molokomme welcomed the development of Vietnam in general, and listed a number of priority issues for members, including intellectual property, especially Vietnam's efforts in perfecting the legal system and improving the effectiveness of intellectual property rights protection. Besides, among nearly 50 speeches, comments and questions raised by WTO members about Vietnam's trade policy, there were many speeches mentioning intellectual property with the main content welcomed the positive changes in Vietnam's legal policy on intellectual property, especially the promulgation of the Intellectual Property Strategy to 2030 and the ratification of the Protocol to amend the TRIPS Agreement. However, some members are still concerned about rights protection issues, especially infringement of copyright and related rights in the digital environment in Vietnam.
Chairing Vietnam's response, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh noted and provided more information for WTO members to see Vietnam's seriousness in complying with WTO multilateral and bilateral commitments and agreements, as well as efforts that Vietnam will implement to improve the protection of intellectual property rights in the coming time.
