In the West, water caltrop is grown a lot in provinces, such as An Giang, Vinh Long, Can Tho, but most is in Lap Vo district, Dong Thap province. Therefore, naturally, tubers are considered a specialty of this area. In Lap Vo district, people fondly call it a tree to get rich. In the past, this plant was only available during the flood season, now it can be grown all year round. All of which contribute to adding new colors to the life picture of farmers in lowland areas.

In Lap Vo district, water caltrop is concentrated in Long Hung B and Vinh Thanh communes. People here prefer Taiwan water caltrop, because this variety has the following characteristics: large fruit, thin skin, high yield. On the other hand, this is also a variety that is easy to grow, easy to care for, not afraid of rain, not afraid of floods, and does not cost much. Normally, when one field is planted, the other field begins to harvest. Thanks to staggered farming, water caltrop does not have an excess of goods in the market and hired farmers also have stable jobs all year round.

The water caltrop were planted by Long Hung B farmer nearly 30 years ago. Initially, water caltrop was grown mainly during the flood season to improve income during leisure time. Gradually realizing the economic efficiency from this crop, farmers have expanded the area, produced intensive farming around, consumed domestically and exported. In the first 7 months of this year, the total area under water caltrop cultivation in the district is 85ha; in which, Long Hung B commune has an area of about 82ha.

Identifying water caltrop as the main crop, over the past time, Lap Vo district has implemented many programs to build images and promote brands for this agricultural product. The water caltrop is also included in the program of branding some specific agricultural products of Dong Thap province, in the period of 2021 - 2025.

Besides, the district also organizes training courses on water caltrop cultivation techniques for farmers in Long Hung B and Vinh Thanh communes; performing demonstration of water caltrop production field model; supporting Long Hung B commune to implement the model of safe water caltrop production. In 2018, the Long Hung B water caltrop growing group had 80ha and was certified to be qualified for safe production...

Hence, products will be legally protected by law, avoiding abuse or forgery, helping consumers identify and choose the right product through identifying the location and origin of the product. Thence, encourage production to develop, promote products, help people produce and increase profits from water caltrop and etc."
