Currently, the cultivars applying high technology are mainly leafy vegetables (cabbage, spinach, ...), fruit vegetables (cucumber, tomato, bitter melon, ...), short-term varieties (melon, watermelon). For tomatoes, the main source of seeds is imported. Research on hybrid and breeding of cherry tomatoes has just been conducted in the recent years, mainly concentrated in the North and Central Highlands. There is very little research in cherry tomatoes in the southern region.
High quality cherry tomatoes, which are mainly served fresh food, especially this variety is suitable for the technology of canning whole fruits. Meat is thick, smooth, firm, dry, sweet, fragrant, hard fruit, able to withstand long transport. Cherry tomatoes are easy to grow, can be grown in many crops, have false and the selling price is 2-3 times higher than regular tomatoes, so it brings high economic efficiency.
In reality, some varieties are heat-resistant, easy to take seeds as breeding materials, but have low fruit quality. Meanwhile, some imported varieties have temperate origin, have good yield, fruit quality, and disease resistance, but it is difficult to keep seeds for selection materials. Therefore, it is necessary to cross-breed hot-tolerant varieties with foreign varieties with good yield and fruit quality, good disease resistance, to adapt to growing conditions in Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces.
The authors have collected and evaluated varieties (domestic, imported, local, wild varieties) to use as crossbreeding materials. After planting, testing, and evaluating, varieties with good characteristics (productivity, high quality, resistance to pests and diseases, good shapes) were bred together.
As a result, the authors have created 12 purebred varieties used as materials for F1 tomato breeding. At the same time, two promising purebred tomato varieties were selected (TN47 - 180 and TN47 - 188) with yield, quality and fruit quality equivalent to the F1 control varieties (HT144). Specifically, the hard fruit is smooth, sweet, fragrant, and sweet (Brix) from 5.9 to 6.2, suitable for fresh food, salad processing and transport. These two varieties have a fruiting rate over 70%, the number of about 90 fruits / tree, individual productivity from 1 to 1.2 kg / tree. At the same time, the variety is adapted to growing conditions in a greenhouse, withstands hot temperatures (35-45 ° C) and is resistant to viral leaf curl, bacterial wilt and yellow leaf disease. |
