Thai Nguyen Institute of Nutrition and Medical University participated in building AI applications on nutrition and diet
An international interdisciplinary research group comprises the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Noguchi Medical Research Institute (Ghana), National Institute of Nutrition and Thai Nguyen University of Medicine (Vietnam) that are carrying out nutrition and dietary research with $ 1.2 million in funding from the Botnar Foundation.

Their goal is to evaluate the feasibility of building and installing a global AI application for capable mobile devices of diagnosing diet-related problems and recommending advice on nutrition for young women living in urban Ghana and in Vietnam. The two Vietnamese researchers, Nguyen Phuong and Hoang Thu Nga, will participate in the management of this interdisciplinary team together with Gloria Folson (Noguchi Medical Institute).

During the first phase of their research, they developed a software based on existing technologies called PlantVillage, which had the ability to track different types of food, containers and serving sizes when your smartphone has an app installed flick through the dish. In that way, the application will help users accurately record their meals, help improve nutritional diet and give correct instructions. Currently, the research team is targeting a group of 30 Ghanaian and Vietnamese teenage girls to explore their ability to accept the application, thereby providing a new way for them to avoid form discrimination and etc. When the project is over, PlantVillage will have all the desired functions and will be available free of charge in Ghana, Vietnam and other countries.
