Nearly 10 years of changing habits
Before 2009, Cu Lao Cham flooded the garbage after welcoming tourists. Garbage was brought by tourists also; the wastes were made by visitors. From a pristine, clean island, Cu Lao Cham is severely polluted. Visitors come to Cu Lao Cham gradually crowed to burden huge bags of rubbish. After each surf wave, plastic bags float on the sea surface, wash to shore.
Then, in a search to cleanse Cu Lao Cham, Mr. Nguyen, former Secretary of the Hoi An City Party Committee decided to implement the plan "Say no to plastic bags". On May 23, 2009, the plan to end the use of plastic bags was officially launched in Cu Lao Cham.
Representing the determination to protect the environment and biodiversity, including sea turtles, representatives of the government and the people of Cu Lao Cham signed together to say no to plastic bags. At the press conference, the management board of Cu Lao Cham gave 50 pairs of cages to enhance the friendly alternative to plastic bags in daily activities.
