The Prime Minister stated the solution to combat climate change at the UN conference

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc today spoke at a high-level online open discussion session with the topic "Addressing threats to international peace and security related to climate" of the United Nations Security Council. (UN Security Council), according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This is the first time that the head of the Vietnamese government attended and spoke at an event within the framework of the Security Council, in the context that Vietnam continues to hold the position of Non-Standing Member for the term of 2020-2021of the Council.

Speaking at the session, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized the serious consequences to Earth and humanity due to the effects of climate change, including negative security and stability impacts in many regions around the world, and at the same time making recommendations on four fundamental groups of solutions that the Security Council needs to gather efforts of the international community in action.

According to the Prime Minister, the Security Council needs a comprehensive and balanced approach when dealing with this issue, especially to eliminate the root causes of conflict ,such as poverty, inequality, political power and intervention, imposed unilaterally.

The Prime Minister called on the serious adherence of the UN Charter and international law to become a standard of conduct in international relations, emphasizing that the Security Council and the international community need to devote more resources to support countries effect of climate change.

The Prime Minister also wished the Security Council to strengthen the capacity of warning, mediating, preventing and resolving conflicts, ensuring respect for national sovereignty, autonomy, placing the common interests of the community and all People, especially vulnerable groups, are at the center of strategies and plans to respond to climate change at the national and global level.

The head of government also affirmed Vietnam's policy and determination to proactively adapt effectively to climate change, and uphold Vietnam's efforts in implementing related international commitments.

The Prime Minister also affirmed to support all efforts to address climate change challenges at the Security Council and other multilateral forums, always cooperating closely within the framework of ASEAN and actively supporting ASEAN-UN cooperation in this field.

Speaking at the session, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern about the negative impact of climate change, affirming this is the leading challenge of the 21st century, while emphasizing the national community action should be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase resources to support affected countries and strengthen multilateral cooperation in this effort.
