Responding to climate change (CC), the leading global challenge today.

Speaking at the discussion session, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc highly appreciated the initiative of the British Government and Prime Minister Boris Johnson in organizing a meeting of the UN Security Council on the topic "Resolving threats to international peace and security"  related to climate.”

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the earth, the green planet and our common home are suffering the fierce impacts of climate change. The year 2020 is one of the three hottest years ever recorded in modern history with severe and sudden impacts of floods, droughts, wildfires, sea level rise, along with a terrible outbreak yet ever of the Covid-19 pandemic.

All these bad things have weighed heavily on the political and socio-economic life of countries, causing unemployment, poverty, threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people, potentially causing instability or aggravate existing conflicts in many countries and regions, thereby threatening the international peace and security environment. Moreover, it is conflict and instability that cause further weakening of the resilience of countries, depriving them of valuable resources that could be devoted to responding to climate change challenges.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc added that Vietnam is in the top 6 countries heavily affected by climate change, so proactively and effectively adapting to climate change is a major policy and high political determination of the State of Vietnam. Vietnam strives to fulfill its international commitments on climate change (SDG-2030, COP-21) and supports all efforts to address climate change challenges at the Security Council and other forums. “We look forward to receiving resource support from the international community to better fulfill our commitments. Vietnam cooperates closely with ASEAN countries and actively supports cooperation between ASEAN and the United Nations," Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc proposed.

At the same time, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized that, although the world is straining to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, responding to the call of the UN Secretary-General: "Creating peace with nature is our central duty of the 21st century”, we need to strengthen action and international solidarity; believes that the "challenges" of climate change can completely become the "driving force" of change, contributing to building a more peaceful and sustainable future for future generations.
