Opportunity to develop products to support Alzheimer's treatment from decoding the US bacosides extraction technology
Through the Intellectual Property Development Program (Program 68), Dr. Hoang Duc Manh (Institute of Medicinal Materials, Ministry of Health) had the opportunity to decipher the technology of extracting active ingredients bacosides from sea bitter herbs to develop a product to support Alzheimer's treatment.

Sea bitter herbs (Bacopa monnieri) is a herbaceous plant, widely distributed in some tropical countries, such as Vietnam, India, Thailand, and etc. In Vietnam, sea bitter herbs is often used as a vegetable (especially in the South) and appear in traditional remedies for bone and joint diseases, nerve tonic, detoxification, and etc. Realizing the outstanding effects of sea bitter herbs in protecting memory and enhancing cognition, some countries around the world such as India have invested in research and development of medicinal products from this vegetable.

Dr. Hoang Duc Manh and his colleagues have found their way in implementing the project of applying patent US6833143B1 without protection in Vietnam to develop a product to support Alzheimer's treatment from sea bitter hrebs (2017-2020).

Just like the general herbal extraction process, the high-content bacoside extraction process under patent US6833143B1 – protected i active ingredient extract; remove impurities; concentrated, dried to form compressed - raw materials for the production of medicinal drugs. However, the difference that makes the process in this present invention possible to extract high concentrations of bacosides on an industrial scale lies in the purification step through different solvent systems.n the US but expired, goes through the usual steps of preparing the medicinal plant; The main purpose is to remove impurities, just like mixing a cup of water to remove sediment, we use different solvents to remove impurities - unwanted groups of active ingredients, to select the best ones,” he explained.

With the goal of practical application, in addition to figuring out how to use different types of solvents to achieve the highest extraction efficiency, the project team also thought about adjusting the process to suit the conditions of Vietnam. In the patent, they use a 35 kg soxhlet extractor, but in Vietnam not many units have it. Therefore, we sought to improve the process to apply it on the available extraction system at the Institute of Medicine. Moreover, many enterprises in Vietnam also have the same extraction system as the Institute of Medicinal Plants, if the process can be found at the Institute of Medicinal Plants, it can be expanded to other units.
