Opening in the morning of May 18, Vietnam STEM Festival 2021 is not only an event to celebrate Science and Technology Day, but also marks the return of the festival itself after a year of hiatus due to Covid-19.

Over the past time, although the epidemic has prevented social activities on a large scale, members of the STEM Alliance - mainly composed of young lecturers and researchers - have not stopped coming to and supporting the Schools in the most remote areas build STEM education activities, helping these places to have impressive achievements in science and technology education in the context of inadequate facilities.

Not a superficial movement

At the opening of the Festival, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy said that, looking back at the picture of Vietnam's STEM education over the years, it can be seen that "the efforts of people who love STEM activities, struggle to create new lessons and new models for students. It is thanks to them that STEM activities not only stop as an activity for schools in the city, for groups of students who understand high technology, but also as a form of teaching for all learners."

According to the Deputy Minister, STEM activities now span from the latest technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), robotics. “We are seeing self-driving cars – from simple to advanced – created by students, including elementary and middle school.” But besides that, "We also see simple projects, close-to-life technologies, such as biotechnology to treat environmental wastes, or local agricultural product processing technologies." With a wide spread of technology and product diversity, STEM has clearly found its way into the lives of students in different locations.

According to Deputy Minister Bui The Duy, the two main activities of the Festival - including the workshop "Creating the future with STEM" and the online exhibition "STEM sparks creativity" - are the best evidence for the above statement. “These two activities have the participation of many units, primary schools, high schools, including remote areas, showing that STEM activities have really gone into its essence, not just movement activities" said the deputy minister.

After 6 years of organization, besides the National STEM Festival, there have been many more STEM Festivals at provincial, district and village levels. The National STEM Festival also inspires more and more schools to organize their own STEM clubs - where science, technology and innovation are expected to spark aspirations and contribute to creating the future, as the name of this year's Vietnam Science and Technology Day.
