Application
To turn water hyacinths into gas
It was about 100 kg of fresh water hyacinth into a biogas cellar; citizens can use gas for 3 days. It is a new solution to help handle the situation of water hyacinths that filled Vam Co Dong river in Tay Ninh. Initially, it brought practically economic efficiency.

Each month the family of Mr.Huan saved money to buy gas more than 500,000 VND.

Mr. Tran Hoai An, the Head of Science and Technology Management division, Department of Science and Technology of Tay Ninh province said, November 2010, People's Committee of Tay Ninh province implemented the project "Application of biogas technology in the handling of water hyacinths in Tay Ninh "by Center for Applied Science and Technology advancements.

Presently, the subject has been experimented in 20 households living along Vam Co Dong river basins and canals in the area of 4 districts, such as Chau Thanh, Ben Cau, Go Dau and Trang Bang. Accordingly, biogas cellars were designed into 10 cellars with volume of 4 m3 /cellar. In which 10 cellars used 100 percent of water hyacinth materials, rest of 10 cellars associated with 50 percent water hyacinths and 50 percent of mucks. Cellar construction costs was approximately 6-8 millions VND / biogas cellar, depending on size. In the pilot phase, the households were supported from budget 100%, the total implementation cost was about 1 billion VND.

After more than two years of implementation, this model gained positive economic effects. Mr. Thai Van Huan (Living hamlet B, Tien Thuan commune, Ben Cau district) is combining the use of water hyacinth resources and mucks for biogas cellars with volume of 4 m3, per month he saves approximately 500,000-700,000 gas money. Mr.Huan said: "It is about 100 kg of combined fresh water hyacinths will produce sufficient amount of spent gas within 3 days.

Water hyacinth source is always available on the river, hyacinth waste residues can also be used as a food for fishes. Mr. Huan shared, water hyacinths were picked up and removed roots, chopped and wilted, then put into cellars to compost according to regulated rates. Each tunnel with area 4 m3, a household will gain enough amount of gas for cooking. If the volume of tunnel is larger, gas amount generates so much, can use for many different needs.

Expected December 2013, Tay Ninh Department of Science and Technology will continue to replicate this model. Initially, they will support techniques and a part of initial funds for people.
