Using ecological technology to control pests attacking rice fields

Recently, Southern Plant Protection Centre associated with Binh Dien Fertilizer Company launched program “Using ecological technology to control pests attacking rice fields” along with 22 Bureaus and head scientists in South Vietnam.

The program “Using ecological technology to control pests attacking rice fields” was first launched in Tien Giang province in 2009 (My Thanh Nam – Cai Lay, Hau My Trinh – Cai Be), Long an, then expanded to 22 provinces in the South, the program aimed use of beneficial insects to kill harmful pests by raising colorful flowers along the field.
On November 2013, there are 131 communes, 65 districts in 16 provinces where implemented this program successfully. Typically, Tien Giang, Long An, Dong Thap, Soc Trang have total area of 5083 hectares, 784 households, 228 models, 689 training classes. The fields where use ecological technology, the number of parasitic wasps and natural pests increased dramatically, the farmers reduced pesticide costs, raised productivity and income, income increased from 0.9 – 2.9 million VND/ha/crop.
In harvest crop 2013-2014, Southern Plan Protection Centre along with the head of Binh Dien Fertilizer Company launched the program, Those who take part in program, can receive fertilizer with basis price for each model with area of 20-50 hectares. The organizer will assess model efficiency as a competition among provinces. Binh Dien company will support a tour to International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) for winning models.
