Rice cultivating on sandy soil
This is a unique cultivation, rice is planted on mixed sandy soil – a kind of substrate that claimed as suitable for crops only. This true story sounds like a joke, happened in Duc Minh Commune, Mo Duc District (Quang Ngai Province).

It located 5 km away from Mo Duc Town, along the road toward Duc Minh coastal, Tan Bac hamlet, is a village covered with the green colors of rice on the two sides of village's road. Mr. Pham Van Lap, a farmer in Minh Tan Bac hamlet said: “Rice cultivation on sandy soil had been planted long time ago. Moreover, it can be grown right at the garden area where the farmers can take care of it more easier.

“In rainy season, the whole commune areas are flooded, there is no plant can be survived, except rice. That is why the unique cultivation way formed.” Mr Lap added.

Normally, the farmlands must go through many stages before cultivating. However, mixed sandy soil just takes some simple steps to plant such as digging, leveling, and covering a thin layer of soil on the surface.

“Only one rice crop per year, sowing on mid August (lunar – calendar) and harvesting on December. Though raising in harsh weather conditions, rices are developed well and the productivity can reach up to 50 quintals per hectare.” According to Mr. Linh, a farmer in Tan Bac Hamlet said.

Deputy chairman of the Commune, Mr. Vo Minh Quang expressed, Duc Minh is the only region in the City applied this unique cultivation way. This model should  be expanded to other sandy soil regions in Vietnam.
