In the workshop to announce the results of research and development of products to support Alzheimer's treatment from Vietnamese sea bitter vegetables took place on April 1, scientists at the Institute of Medicinal Materials reported the results of the project "invention US6833143B1 not protected in Vietnam to develop products to support the treatment of Alzheimer's from Vietnamese sea bitter vegetables ”(2017-2020). This project is part of the Intellectual Property Development Program (Program 68), in the field of technology decoding, typically exploiting unprotected inventions in Vietnam.

Bacopa monnieri is a herbaceous plant, widely distributed in some tropical countries, such as Vietnam, India, Thailand, and etc. In Vietnam, sea bitter vegetables are often used as vegetables (especially in the South) and appeared in traditional remedies for osteoarthritis, nerve tonic, detoxification, and etc. Realizing the outstanding effects of sea bitter vegetables in memory protection and awareness enhancement, some countries in the world such as India have invested in research and development of medicinal products from this vegetable.

Vietnamese scientists have also been interested in marine bitter vegetables for a long time, but due to limited conditions, most of them only stop at basic research. For example, since the 2000s, some research groups at the Institute of Medicinal Materials have demonstrated bacosides (triterpenoid saponins) - the main ingredient in sea bitter vegetables, effective in preventing memory / cognitive decline, anti-stress, and etc.

The opportunity to bring a useful plant species in folk remedies, such as sea bitter vegetables into a well-researched and convenient product for users has come to scientists at the Institute of Medicinal Materials through the project "Applying invention US6833143B1 not protected in Vietnam to develop products to support the treatment of Alzheimer's from Vietnamese sea bitter vegetables."
