Acceptance of the task of producing bio-fertilizer from egg shells and shrimp head shells
Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology has just organized a Council to accept the scientific and technological task “Research on the process of extracting calcium from egg shells; oligochitosan, an amino acid from shrimp head shells, used as a biological foliar fertilizer. This is a task led by the Southern Center for Soil, Fertilizer and Environmental Research (Institute of Soil and Agrochemicals) to increase the reuse of agricultural by-products (poultry eggshells and shrimp head shells) to create a secondary product which is foliar fertilizer for cultivation.

Reporting at the acceptance session, Dr. Lam Van Ha (in charge of the task) reported the implementation of the contents of the extraction process of Ca2+ (Ion Ca) from the eggshell of poultry and the extraction of chitosan, and the recovery of amino acids from the shell of the shrimp head, through heating with bio-enzyme catalysis and preparation of Oligochitosan. Thence, the group has mixed calcium extract from poultry egg shells with Oligochitosan and amino acids from shrimp head shells, creating two products of high quality Ca-Oligochitosan-Amin-TE biological foliar fertilizer, used for vegetables and ornamental plants.

The implementation team tested the addition of Ca-Oligochitosan-Amin-TE biological foliar fertilizer to vegetables grown on gray soil in Cu Chi district. The product has a positive effect on the growth and development of plants, increases resistance, improves yield and quality of crops. In addition, the use of foliar fertilizers also reduced the damage of rot disease and improved the organoleptic quality of vegetables.

Egg shells and shrimp head shells are considered agricultural wastes, so making use of this waste is an important issue in environmental protection and development of circular agricultural economy, improving the value chain of agriculture production.

This is a direction in line with the development orientation of safe and organic vegetables in the current period, contributing to improving people's health and reducing environmental pollution. Moreover, the created probiotics used in agricultural cultivation also help reduce the amount of chemical fertilizers while ensuring the productivity and quality of vegetables meeting food safety standards and ensuring environmental safety.
