According to the Telegraph, this is not the original skin color of the elephant, nor it is painted. Schalk van der Merwe Photographer said, the elephant turns into white after taking a mud bath to cool.
Under African harsh sunlight, the elephant stands in the mud, and uses its hose to suck mud and spray throughout the body. When dried layers of calcite and iron in the mud stick the elephant, it wears a white skin as gypsum. It is surrounded by herds of zebra, highlighting painting "white elephant" in Etosha Park. It means "a white castle."
