According to Cai Lay Agriculture and Rural Development Division (Tien Giang), Cai Lay district is the region where has been growing durian with over 6,000 hectares, the largest durian growing area in the whole country, including 4,000 hectares is having fruits, most durian area concentrated on key communes, such as Ngu Hiep, Tam Binh, Long Trung, Long Tien, Long Khanh, Cam Son.

Thank to stable selling price, durian gardeners got annual income about 300 million VND/ha.
According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Phuc who owned the largest durian garden with over 4,000 m2 in My Thuan A hamlet, Long Tien commune said, currently durian’s price such as Monthoong, Ri6, Chuong Bo is about 25,000 – 31,000 VND/Kg, compared to a month ago, the price decreased, however the gardeners ensured with high income.
According to Mr. Ngo Quoc Cuong, Chairman of Long Trung People’s Committee, Durian’s price in this year is high because Chinese market consumed strongly. However, when authorities found out that some foreign traders dipped durians into unknown compounds which reduced durian’s price dramatically.
Mr. Le Quang Tich in Ngu Hiep Commune said, this year seedless durian’s price is stable, over 30,000 VND/Kg. At this price, subtracting all expenses, gardeners can get interest about 300 million VND/ha.
According to Ngu Hiep Cooperative management board, durian has been growing in Ngu Hiep islet since 1991. Thank to putting high technology into production, the durian can give fruits in inverse season, partially raise income for farmers.
Durian is an efficient economy fruit with high productivity. Therefore, Cai Lay authorities encouraged people to pursue intensive model and expand to nearby communes, such as Tam Binh, Long Trung, Long Tien, Hoi Xuan, Long Khanh, Cam Son and etc. |
