Can Tho University: Conservation and development of Nien fish breed
Through the implementation of an urgent research task in the locality, the School of Fisheries - Can Tho University has successfully implemented the project: "Building a process for seed production and commercial farming of Nien fish. Onychostoma gerlachi Peters, 1881) in Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province", making an important contribution to the conservation and sustainable development of precious and rare aquatic resources that are in danger of extinction.

After 2 years of implementation, scientists from the School of Fisheries have successfully completed the set goals. Specifically, the project has successfully built a model of seed production and commercial farming of Nien fish with high efficiency, adapting to natural ecological conditions and climate change in Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province. This is an important scientific basis as a basis for further research activities on the native fish species in the following aspects: (1) Protecting and rationally and effectively exploiting rare fish genetic resources for the Central Highlands region; (2) Building a database of effective (single, compound) farming models and methods; (3) Assess the impact of technological and management solutions to improve productivity, adaptability to the environment, etc. to effectively exploit this resource; (4) Proposing solutions to effectively exploit the potential value of land, water and indigenous aquatic resources, especially Nien fish species in production conditions at household scale (the main livelihood model of Vietnamese ethnic minorities in mountainous areas). High quality fish products, contributing to raising income for farmers, is the basis for continuing to research and improve product quality and production models;  (5) Orienting planning, development and effective application of solutions to contribute to the protection, rational exploitation and sustainable development of Nien fish production model for lands with similar ecological conditions, such as Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province.

The results of the project have helped to conserve and rationally and effectively exploit the rare indigenous Nien fish genetic resources in Kon Tum province; train technical human resources for the locality to diversify production models; step by step increase income and improve the lives of people in Kon Tum province in particular and the Central Highlands in general.
