MIDOLI provides Sustainable Agricultural Biotechnology Solutions
With the desire to provide biotechnological solutions for agriculture in a safe and sustainable way, MSc Nguyen Van Minh (Research and Application of Biotechnology, Open University of Ho Chi Minh City) and associates established MIDOLI, startup specializes in providing a set of products and processes based on beneficial microorganisms for plants and aquatic products in ecological conditions in Vietnam.

MSc. Nguyen Van Minh (right) talked with Mr. Lien Minh Kha, a shrimp farmer in Soc Trang, about the microbiological product set provided by MIDOLI.

The product Tri-BIOMI 3X mentioned in his words is a biological product in a set of microbiological products that helps to stimulate growth, prevent and fight fungi and pests by MSc Nguyen Van Minh (Research and Biotechnology Applications Center, Ho Chi Minh City Open University) and his associates.

Sharing at the Workshop "VINIF - A mark of 5 years of operation", he said that he had received funding from the Vingroup Innovation Fund (VINIF) in 2020. “The fertilizer industry is extremely pesticide-free. Each trial costs nearly 2 billion VND, lasting from 1-2 years. There were periods where I thought it was good to just give up." However, with a grant from VINIF, he and his colleagues had the resources to focus on their research.

He began to approach solving each problem in turn. The team has developed an optimal fermentation formulation that enhances activity against fungi and nematodes - a very important agricultural disease. The product BIOMI-AntiFB1 includes two strains of B. polufermenticus MTCC04, B. amyloliquefaciens MTCC09 with antifungal activity from 64.5-95.6%. Meanwhile, the product BIOMI-AntiN1 includes a strain of Bacillus sp. MTCC10 has the ability to control the growth of nematode larvae to 99.99% compared to the original 67.23%.

Scientists also determined a combination formula between bacteria and plant extracts to prevent red two-spotted spider (Tetranychus urticae) and gray worm (Agrotis ipsilon). These organisms cause serious harm to vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe, melons, gourds, squash, etc. The team combined wormwood extract with Bacillus sp. MTCC05 at 12% concentration to kill spiders after 96 hours. In addition, they also combined neem seed extract with B. thurigiensis at a ratio of 1:1 to kill worms after 72 hours.

Currently, the solutions have been practically tested on many commercial shrimp ponds and crop farms, such as Sadec Farm organic tangerine garden, Lam Vien - Duc Trong - Lam Dong organic vegetable garden, organic pepper garden, organic dragon fruit garden in MangYang - Gia Lai, organic red flesh dragon fruit garden in Chi Cong commune - Tuy Phong - Binh Thuan, etc.
