New gecko species in Vietnam

Scientists have discovered a species of the genus Gekko based on samples collected in the limestone Cao Bang, Vietnam and China.

New scientific name of gecko is Gekko adleri Nguyen, Wang, Yang, Lehmann, Le, Ziegler & Bonkowski, 2013. The new species is named by Professor Kraig Adler, a study of reptiles and amphibians of the U.S. famous. The discovery of new species is the result of collaborative research between scientists in Vietnam, China and Germany. The results are published this month in the journal Zootaxa.
Adleri gecko (ad lo) is characterized as the head and body length of 75 mm, 83 mm tail length. Most of them on the head and body is gray-brown or gray to black with 4 colored stripes on the back.
New gecko species epiphytes or interstitial small cliff in limestone areas, the foods found in their stomachs as crickets, bees and termites.
Currently scientists recorded species of the genus there are 12 gecko in Vietnam. It should be noted that the scientific community, although limestone areas in Ha Lang and Chongqing district, Cao Bang province is not the nature reserve but a high value on biodiversity. The research team of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources has discovered three new species for science in this area in the past two years. |
