However, farmers still use too many pesticides in the prevention of pests and diseases, which makes the product not hygienic and food safety and pollutes the environment.

From that reality, in May, 2017, Thu Thua District Agricultural Extension Station implemented the demonstration model "Watermelon Cultivation under VietGAP" at Mr. Duong Hong Phuc's household in Hamlet 2, My Phu commune. The watermelon variety is the Red Sun. The model uses microbial organic fertilizer with a dose of 50kg / 1.000m2, combines with 1kg of Trichoderma. In addition, farmers use Pseudomonate, Mega Power, Nitrogen Chitosan.
The goal of the model is to promote and encourage farmers to grow watermelon using bio-products and microorganisms, and reduce the amount of chemical drugs in order to create products that are safe and environmentally friendly.

After 2 months of implementing model, results showed that the actual yield of watermelon was 3.2 tons / 1.000 m2, 7% higher than the control (0.3 tons / 1.000 m2). The number of chemical sprays was 8 times, one reduction compared to the control (9 times) but the big difference was the demonstration site replaced 4 chemical sprays with microbiological and biological preparations for prevention of pests and diseases. In addition, Mr. Phuc also used a homemade mixture of garlic, onions, ginger to spray on watermelon to ward off pests.
