Improving productivity and quality of dairy herds in Ho Chi Minh City
Dairy farming is the strength of the agricultural sector in Ho Chi Minh City. The city focuses on improving the productivity and quality of dairy herds in order to bring high economic efficiency, helping dairy farmers to develop sustainably. According to the statistics of Ho Chi Minh City Agricultural Extension Center, by the end of 2019, the total number of dairy cows in Ho Chi Minh City is about 65,000 dairy cows and the most concentrated in Cu Chi, Hoc Mon and Binh Chanh districts.

In the period of 2016-2020, Ho Chi Minh City advocates not to increase the herd of dairy cows, focusing on improving productivity and quality, reducing production costs and increasing economic efficiency for farmers. In which, the important solution is to reduce the private dairy farmers, low-yield dairy cows. Encourage farmers to eliminate unproductive dairy cows, and repeatedly combine cows without conception and old cows.

In order to develop Ho Chi Minh City dairy cows in the direction of increasing productivity and quality assurance, it is necessary to attach importance to the selection of breeds. According to experts, the breed decides up to 40% of the milk production, so it is necessary to select the cows through appearance, choose the ones with balanced shape, suitable  body weight for each age and the corresponding breed. At the same time, applying the criteria of good farming practice (VietGAP) in dairy cow farming in households, improving the rate of mechanization and modernization in dairy cow farming.
