Detection of genes in rice could help increase productivity
|
|
Scientists of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), located on Manila (Philippines) and Japanese colleagues discovered a gene in rice that is more likely to increase the yield of Indica modern rice species with long grains.

Xinhua News Agency quoted professor Nobuya Kobayasahi of Agricultural Research Organization and National Food under Japan Crops Science Research Institute, worked at IRRI Institute, said: "We have found this gene in a tropical japonica rice variety in Indonesia."
The discovery of SPIKE genes also means that breeders can begin to integrate this gene in indica rice varieties that are being widely used today. Professor Kobayashi said genes can help improve the structure of rice that does not alter the quality of grain or rice growth cycle.
IRRI confirmed to integrate SPIKE genes into indica rice varieties - rice varieties are being used more than 70% of the area of rice cultivation in the world, can contribute to guarantee for global food security. SPIKE genes can help increase the productivity of more indica rice varieties from 13-36%.
