Widespread use of herbicides can have negative impacts on health and the environment

Currently, the widespread use of herbicides to protect crops causes negative impacts on human health and the living environment.

According to Mrs. Bui Thanh Huong, Head of the Division of Plant Protection Medicines (Department of Plant Protection - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the trend of using biological pesticides is increasing and popular in the developed and developing countries.
In Vietnam, in the years 2020-2023, the number of biological pesticides increased from 768 to 810 commercial names allowed for use. Currently, the average amount of pesticides used decreases from 3.81kg/ha in 2020 to 3.19kg/ha in 2022. Of which, the amount of biological pesticides used increases from 16.67% in 2021 to 18.49% in 2022.
Besides the results achieved, reality in our country over the past years shows that instead of cultivating and clearing fields and gardens before the new season with agricultural tools, farmers in many localities use pesticides. Eliminate weeds to shorten the time and kill weeds quickly. This practice actually pollutes the environment, going against the policy of organic agricultural production, aiming for clean and safe agricultural products.
The increasing abuse of herbicides brings many harmful consequences to production, the environment, and public health, threatening the sustainable development of agriculture. Even many types of agricultural products have had a reputation in the international market because of excessive pesticide residues. |
