According to the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), Mekong Delta is currently facing with the consequences of climate change (CC). Climate change leads to rising sea levels caused 38% of Mekong Delta area at risk of being submerged in sea in 2100. Notably, a number of coastal areas are serious erosion (about 30 meters per year), mangroves along the coast protect mainland from storms, floods, salinization ... are seriously impaired.
According to the survey of GIZ, the coastal salinization lands caused farming, aquaculture cultivation of coastal region people are difficult, even impossible to breed any animals, plant any crops to feed themselves and their families.
Therefore, GIZ cooperated with the Government of Australia and Vietnam to implement integrated coastal area management program (ICMP) to help Mekong Delta coastal areas combated climate change and the harsh environment change better.
Accordingly, ICMP came up with management experiences, technical solutions, raised climate change awareness adverse impacted on the environment for the people, help them behave more appropriate in environmental protection, coastal protection to prevent saltwater intrusion.
Thus, with the hand of cooperation between the Government of Vietnam and the Government of Germany, Australia and etc, a series of breakwater barrier projects and development of mangroves in ICMP program will be efficiently implemented, bring livelihood to the people of coastal areas, reduce natural disasters due to climate change. |
