Introduction of technology to raise flies to fertilize plants

Black soldier flies not only treat wastes or make animal feed, but their wastes also contain a lot of nutrients to produce organic fertilizer.

This information was presented by Dr. Lam Van Ha, Research Center for Soil, Fertilizers and Environment, at the first Technology Cooperation session on the production of bio-organic fertilizer from black soldier flies. The event was organized by Ho Chi Minh City Center for Science and Technology Information and Statistics (CESTI) with the participation of 40 guests from businesses, cooperatives and investors.
According to Dr. Lam Van Ha, the current demand for organic fertilizer in Vietnam is about 50 million tons, but the production and import of organic fertilizer is only about 3.2 million tons. It is predicted that in the coming years, the amount of organic fertilizer will be in short supply, so the research to find out the sources of raw materials for the production of organic fertilizer imperatively.
"Black soldier flies not only have the ability to treat wastes or make feed, but their wastes also contain many nutrients to be used as raw materials in the production of organic fertilizer," said Mr. Ha.
Black soldier flies grow and develop well in confined spaces in tropical climates like Vietnam. This is an animal that brings quite a high economic value to farmers, with larvae (28 days old) the price may be up to 100,000 VND / kg; fly eggs from 15-30 million VND / kg. Black soldier fly larvae contain a variety of nutrients, which are a good source of organic fertilizer. However, this source of material is often overlooked by black soldier fly flies, which are often overlooked as wastes, a by-product of farms. |
