Intellectual -Property
Small and medium businesses are still indifferent to intellectual property
A survey of the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City with nearly 4,000 businesses in Ho Chi Minh City in 2019 showed that only 1.63% of enterprises have trained, or specialized intellectual property personnel; and 2.25% of enterprises have issued internal regulations, regulations on management of intellectual property.

The above statistic was said by Mr. Vu Hung Son - Head of Department of Science and Technology management, Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City - said at the Forum "Small and medium enterprises with intellectual property", by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam coordinated with the University Industrial School of Ho Chi Minh City to hold on April 17 in Ho Chi Minh City. The event is part of the activities to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day April 26.

Also according to a survey by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology, only 0.66% of enterprises record intellectual property as intangible fixed assets on the balance sheet. According to Mr. Son, this proves that enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises, are not currently interested in intellectual property, not fully aware of the role of intellectual property in production activities, your business.

Many businesses believe that, because they are small and medium enterprises, there is no need to have a specialized division in charge of intellectual property, or that the job belongs to the office, administrative or legal department. Most businesses, especially newly established ones, are mainly interested in registering trademarks, business names or logos, but do not know how to identify and manage intellectual property.

Meanwhile, intellectual property plays a huge role in the development of businesses. According to Mrs. Doan Thieu Trang - Center for Research, Training and Support, the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam - Intellectual property is a core business asset in the knowledge economy, helping businesses expand business production, market, support to settle commercial disputes, and etc. Practicing the right establishment or good protection of intellectual property will promote the technology transfer of the protected objects. At the same time, it helps businesses control and hold important assets, and protect them from competitors.

Mrs. Trang said that businesses need to manage intellectual property since it was first formed and the commercialization process. At the same time, protect intellectual property rights and exploit it to make it a tool to promote consumption of products and services, and bring economic value to businesses. Small and medium enterprises with difficulties in financial potential, human resources, can exploit intellectual property of big enterprises, such as licensing, transferring intellectual property rights, and etc.
