Opening of the General Assembly of WIPO 2023
On July 6, 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland, the 64th session of the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) officially opened at WIPO Headquarters.


The Vietnamese delegation attended the opening session of the General Assembly of WIPO 2023

Attending the opening session of the WIPO General Assembly, there were the WIPO Leader Board, a number of Ministers, Chief Ambassadors of the Delegations of countries in Geneva, and delegations of WIPO member countries. Attending the conference, there were representatives of intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and observer organizations. This year's General Assembly was chaired by Mrs. Tatiana Molcean, Head of the Moldovan Delegation to Geneva. The Vietnamese delegation attending the opening session included Mrs. Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Ambassador, Head of the Permanent Representative of Vietnam Delegation to Geneva, Mr. Dinh Huu Phi, Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property. Mr. Tran Le Hong, Deputy Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property, Mr. Le Minh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Copyright Department and some officials of the NOIP.


Speaking at the Opening Session, Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO welcomed the attendance of all member country delegations and observers. He said that according to the statistics of the WIPO Secretariat, this year's session recorded the attendance of about 1,200 delegates from 193 member countries of WIPO, the highest number in the history of WIPO.

Mr. Daren Tang also emphasized that WIPO's Medium-Term Strategic Plan 2022-2026 (MTSP 2022-2026) continues to aim to implement projects to connect IP with all entities around the world, while working towards addressing global challenges and the United Nations' Strategic Development Goals (SDGs).

Mr. Dinh Huu Phi, Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property, on behalf of the Vietnamese Delegation delivered a speech at the Opening Session. He shared some positive results of Vietnam's intellectual property system over the past time, such as the promulgation of the Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Intellectual Property Law, which is actively implementing the National Intellectual Property Strategy, Intellectual Property Development Program under the Prime Minister's Decision, acceding to 4 international IP treaties for the period of 2021-2023 (to date, Vietnam has joined 15 international treaties administered by WIPO). These results were achieved thanks to the close attention and direction of the leaders of the State and Government of Vietnam, as well as the effective and active cooperation and support of WIPO. He also affirmed that Vietnam will continue to promote cooperation with WIPO as well as with other member countries to promote the use of intellectual property rights as a tool to create jobs, attracting investment, promoting business and economic development.

The General Assembly session is expected to last until July 14, 2023 with 27 contents on the agenda.
