Powering Computers with Electronic Blood
To help improve the efficiency and lifespan of the emerging generation of powerful computer chips, IBM researchers have developed a brain-inspired computer powered and cooled by ‘electronic blood.’

The “redox flow” system was demonstrated in a very basic model at the IBM lab in Zurich. The technology features computer chips equipped with tiny channels that circulate an electrolyte fluid throughout the computer, delivering power and removing heat. Using the fluid to cool heat in this way will allow scientists to develop smaller electronics or stack chips on top of each other in to create a 3D structure.

IBM hopes to match the computing power of the human brain, which is contained in a tiny space and uses only 20 watts of energy.
