The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training on April 17, 2024 at Hanoi University of Science and Technology with the purpose of identifying the current situation and orienting research and development of semiconductor technology in Vietnam; Assessing human resource needs and orientation for training human resources in the semiconductor field in Vietnam; and Connecting between research organizations, businesses and regulatory agencies to promote the development of science, technology and innovation activities in the semiconductor field.       

Speaking at the opening of the Workshop, Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat said, "semiconductor chips in particular and the semiconductor industry in general are like 'grains of rice' because they feed all different fields in this century," Technology resources are the key to future digital technologies.

During the past time, the legal corridor to facilitate the priority of attracting investment and developing semiconductors has been carefully constructed, according to which the Investment and Income Tax Act has supplemented special incentives for high-tech, large-scale, high-value-added projects, including semiconducting production projects. Accordingly, so far, Vietnam has been increasingly attracting many large corporations in the semiconductor industry from developed countries, such as the United States, Korea, Japan, the Netherlands... (about 40 companies). At the same time, many domestic companies have entered the market like Viettel, FPT, VNChip, and etc.

The Minister emphasized that the Science, Technology and Innovation Development Strategy until 2030 has identified the technology of manufacturing microcontroller chips, semiconductor components... as one of the core technologies oriented for development in the next decade. Recently, many national science and technology programs have been developed and started to be implemented to concretize the Strategy, typically: National Product Program, KC 4.0/19-25 program on typical technologies of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution, Program KC.03/21-30 on mechanical automation, National High Technology Development Program, and etc.
