Self-created energy prison by allowing prisoners use electric bike

A prison in Brazil said it would reduce the judgment for the prisoners using bike to generate electricity to lighting.

According to the Jornal Nacional, the prisoners at Santa Rita jail by Sapucai in Minas (Brazil) can reduce his prison sentence by biking to generate electricity. Every 16 hours of power, the prisoners will be a day parole.
Electric created by the prisoners is saved in the charged system and then used to light the lamp in downtown Minas.
Currently, the Santa Rita jail has only two Sapucai bicycle generator. However, this prison is getting 8bikes more after tests showed that the program is effective and the prisoners are entitled to interest.
In addition to reduced prison sentence, cycle power generation also is an opportunity for inmates to exercise and break the monotony of the prison. One prisoner even reduces 2kg after taking power-cycling program.
Mr. Henrique Mallmann, head of the Santa Rita jail by Sapucai, said he found this idea on the internet after reading about similar programs in the U.S.. In 2010, Tent City jail in Phoenix have adopted cycling program generator to be watching television for women prisoners. The prisoner must ride an hour if they want to watch TV in the same time. |
