AWRC is a global research center where concentrates universities, interdisciplinary scientists, inter-nations to provide infrastructure for collaborative research, academic exchange and talent incubator in the water field among 14 member countries of RESCIF.
* Speaking at the conference on "Adapting to climate change in the coastal zone of Soc Trang" in the morning, November 19, in Ho Chi Minh city, Dr. Klaus Schmitt, Chief Technical Advisor of Soc Trang GIZ project (German International Cooperation Organization), said that most of Soc Trang coast is narrow mangrove forest belt that protects from erosion, storms and floods.
However, the unsustainable use of natural resources and coastal development are threatening the protective function of the forest belt. According to estimations, each hectare of destroyed mangrove forest loses 1, 08 tons of caught fish per year, while spending $ 1.1 million to restore mangrove forests in Viet Nam annually saved $ 7, 3 million for dike maintenance. |
